MAJINA

Tanzania, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently engaged in preparations for updating the Permanent Voter Register (PVR) as part of its efforts to streamline electoral processes. This includes training sessions for regional and council-level officials, emphasizing the importance of close collaboration with the commission to ensure the process is efficient and effective.

However, the commission has faced criticism over its independence and structure. Critics argue that INEC is heavily influenced by the President, as its members are appointed and can be dismissed by the President, which undermines its autonomy. The commission's ability to make critical decisions, such as the creation of electoral districts, is also seen as contingent on presidential approval, raising concerns about electoral integrity.

Moreover, there is ongoing debate about the need for reforms to enhance the commission’s independence and transparency. Some stakeholders are advocating for constitutional amendments to ensure that the commission operates free from presidential influence, similar to independent electoral bodies in other countries .

These discussions are part of broader efforts to improve Tanzania's electoral framework, including increasing the representation of women in politics and addressing issues like violence against women in elections.
