Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination grading system

The ACSEE (Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination) grading system used in Tanzania is based on grades from A to F, with corresponding performance levels and points.

Principal Passes
GRADING F6

For university admission and other higher education opportunities, principal passes are:

  • A – Principal Pass
  • B – Principal Pass
  • C – Principal Pass
  • D – Principal Pass
  • E – Principal Pass (lowest principal pass)

The S (Subsidiary) grade is not a principal pass, although it may count as a subsidiary pass in some contexts.

Division Classification

Divisions are determined by the total points from the best three principal subjects:

DivisionTotal Points
Division I3–9 points
Division II10–12 points
Division III13–17 points
Division IV18–19 points
Division 0No principal passes

For example:

  • A + A + B = 1 + 1 + 2 = 4 pointsDivision I
  • B + C + D = 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 pointsDivision I
  • C + D + E = 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 pointsDivision II

This is the grading framework commonly used for ACSEE results in Tanzania
